Many years ago, when I was still a child of only nine or ten years, I remember often being looked after by a person other than my parents, when they were at work or out socializing. I was never formally introduced to this woman - she had just been a friend of the family and carer for as long as I could remember. So I didn't question who she was.

However, one day, as I said, when I was around ten years old, she made a sudden and quite shocking declaration to me, in the form of a question: "Did you know that I am your grandmother?" she asked sternly.

I think I stood silent for several moments - it was such a strange thing to say. "No" I replied. "Had you never suspected it?" Again I replied negatively, and indeed I had not, for this woman looked no older than 30 years - how could she possibly be my grandmother?

After I had calmed down a little and we'd had a cup of tea. I asked her which side of the family she was on, how old she was and why she looked so young. The answers were that she was my mother's mother, she was sixty-seven and that for the last twenty years she had been trying a new form of anti aging skin care.
